What’s the Story with Bath Salts?

It’s no surprise that one of our most popular recovery products is our bath salts. So good, in fact, that our friends (or potential upcoming world cup opponents, cue elevated heartbeats), the All Blacks, received their very own shipment to aid their recovery over the six weeks of the Rugby World Cup.

But what’s so great about bath salts? Hell, how does throwing a load of salt into a bath help us recover at all?

Well, it does, and trust us, you feel pretty damn amazing after a handful or two of our bath salts added to some hot water.

For our bath salts are made up of both Epsom salt and a combination of some of the most delicious sounding, and smelling, essential oils available.

Fun fact; Epsom salt was discovered in 1618, a result of boiling down mineral waters at a certain location in England – you guessed it; Epsom! It has since been used over the past hundreds of years for therapeutic purposes.

Epsom salt is, in fact, magnesium sulphate. Magnesium plays an important role within enzyme activity in the body, helps improve muscle and nerve function, reduces inflammation, and improves blood flow. Sulfates are needed for healthy joints, skin and nervous tissue. Research has shown that Epsom salts help replenish magnesium and sulfate levels in the body. Replenished magnesium and sulfate levels equal more rapid recovery. And for those of you that like to start your day free from that nagging inkling of muscular fatigue, the combo of “rapid” and “recovery” is music to the ears.

The magnesium element of Epsom salt has also been reported to relieve stress and improve mood, via its role as a co-factor in the conversion of the amino acid tryptophan to serotonin. Happy days for those who might struggle to nod off after a manic day. A quick (or long, if your schedule allows it) soak in a warm and wonderful bath enriched with our salts will send you snoozing in record time.

As we always say here at Pure Athlete – we are all different. If it works for you, fantastic, if not, no problem, not your thing.
